Summary

Methyl-4-[(2E)-3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienyloxy]-3-hydroxybenzoate (1) has been identified fromthe New Zealand liverwort Trichocolea hatcheri (T. hatcheri). This compound was tested for itsgrowth inhibitory effects against tumor cell lines using two different assays, the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and the sulforhodamineB protein (SRB) assay. This compound showed inhibitory activity in vitro in the micromolarconcentration range against tumor cells. These results suggest that methyl-4-[(2E)-3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienyloxy]-3-hydroxybenzoate (1) possessed antitumorous agent.
